– Authored by Rachael, an intern at Fifty Acres

Applying for work experience as a communications student can feel daunting. Before my internship at Fifty Acres, I worried that my lack of experience would hold me back. I felt overwhelmed and unsure if I could truly contribute to the team. However, over the past few months, I have grown more confident in my abilities than ever before. As my internship comes to an end, I want to reflect on four key takeaways that I will carry with me throughout my future career.

Don’t be scared to get creative!

During my internship, I was given creative freedom in nearly every task I took on. Whether it was writing a blog post on a communications trend of my choice or experimenting with Canva to design social media tiles, I had the space to explore my creativity. This experience allowed me to tap into my more innovative side, which is essential in public relations, where “thinking outside the box” is a key part of the job.

It is ok to ask for help

As someone new to the industry, I initially hesitated to ask for guidance, fearing it would make me seem inexperienced or like an imposter. However, at Fifty Acres, I was met with support and a culture of encouragement. This positive environment not only gave me the confidence to seek help and improve my work but also showed me what a great workplace experience can look like—one that fosters growth and learning.

Challenges and the unknown don’t need to be feared

At the start of my internship, I was given the challenge of writing media releases and strategising media angles—tasks that had always intimidated me. While I am still learning, I’ve come to realise that growth comes with practice and that I don’t need to strive for perfection right away. No one becomes a professional overnight, and embracing the learning process has been a valuable lesson.

A taste for what’s to come

My favourite part of interning at Fifty Acres was seeing my work published—whether it was social media posts or blog articles on their website. It was incredibly rewarding to know that my contributions were valued, and it gave me a glimpse of the exciting possibilities that lie ahead in my career.

I truly valued my experience at Fifty Acres, and I would highly recommend it to any communications student seeking new opportunities for work experience.
