Communication has the power to shape how people think, feel, and respond. Whether influencing public opinion, building trust, or challenging stigma, strategic communication can shift perceptions for good –  to inform, connect, and inspire action.

Here are several communication tools that can effectively influence perception and public conversation:

Opinion pieces (op-ed)

Op eds provide a platform to challenge misconceptions, advocate for change, and humanise complex issues. A strong op-ed combines expertise, lived experience, and clear arguments to influence both public thinking and decision-makers.

Thought leadership

Unlike traditional media, thought leadership pieces offer full control over messaging. It can be posted on owned media platforms such as organisational website and LinkedIn. These pieces can build credibility, showcase expertise, and directly shape how professional audiences perceive a person, organisation, or issue without external gatekeeping.

Radio interviews

One of the most personal forms of media, radio interviews, when included in your media mix, can significantly influence audience perception through tone, emotion, and authenticity. These interviews are a powerful tool for building trust, relatability, and public connection.

Newsjacking

Given its name, as it refers to the “jacking” of stories or news, newsjacking taps into trending news or current conversations, and allows organisations and spokespeople to position themselves as relevant, timely, and informed. By contributing meaningful commentary to an existing news cycle, communicators can shape how audiences understand an issue in real time.

At its core, effective communication is about storytelling with purpose. When used thoughtfully and responsibly, communication can challenge stereotypes, elevate unheard voices, and create meaningful social impact.
